An urgent appeal to save lives
Since the eruption of violence in March 2011, Hand in Hand for Syria has been at the forefront of international humanitarian assistance inside Syria. Working with our teams on the ground, we have delivered food, clothes, shelter, ambulances, educational resources, and medical treatment to thousands of people across Syria.
The violent conflict has shattered Syria’s health system when the need is greatest. An estimated 15,000 health workers have been killed or forced to flee, and more than half of the country’s hospitals are damaged or destroyed. Our extensive network of aid workers is delivering essential medical supplies to seventy hospitals and medical points across Syria. But we need to do more - people are still dying unnecessarily from poor healthcare and a lack of resources.
We want to help rebuild the country’s medical infrastructure, starting now. In January 2013, Hand in Hand for Syria opened its first women and children’s hospital in Atmeh, Idlib province, serving a combined local and refugee population of 45,000 people. As the only specialist unit of its kind in northern Syria, it saw 2000 children in the first month alone. We have now opened our second children’s hospital, in addition to a large general hospital with seven specialist clinics; we are excited to have other such projects in the pipeline.
Food scarcity is a growing threat facing people in Syria. According to the UN, one in five people is now unable to buy or produce enough food to survive; in the besieged parts of Damascus and Homs, children are dying of malnutrition. Thanks to your donations, we have been able to reopen bakeries, deliver 7000 tonnes of flour, and distribute food boxes to 20,000 families. We have opened a food kitchen in a besieged area of Homs providing regular meals to displaced families. We want to help people to help themselves, and are currently planning a textile workshop and opening a school to get local children back into education.
We believe in delivering emergency relief in a sustainable way, such as by employing local staff so that they can support their own families, buying supplies in Syria to help the country’s economy, and providing training to local Syrian doctors equipping them to deal with the terrible injuries of war.
We know our donors want every penny they give to be used wisely so we keep our administration costs to a minimum. We are a non-political organisation funded by donations, run by a small team of dedicated staff and volunteers, and governed by a board of trustees. Hand in Hand for Syria is growing; we are now a registered charity in three countries: the UK, Turkey and France, and we are an implementing partner for many other charities and NGOs. Our head office is in London and our field office in Turkey oversees all of our Syria operations. We operate according to universally recognised humanitarian principles and in full compliance with the regulations of each country’s law.
The conflict in Syria is rapidly developing into the worst humanitarian crisis we have seen this century. Whilst the world continues to look for a solution, we are committed to doing everything we can to ease some of the suffering, and be a voice for the people affected.
